Rough Trade a Musical Experience

Rough Trade a Musical Experience

Rough Trade sprang to life in the 70’s importing rare records from the Caribbean reggae and the US punk scenes.  Having recently just celebrated their 34th Birthday things are looking better than ever as the thirst for original music has exploded. Heather Hutchinson from The Eleven interviewed Rough Trade East boss Spencer Hickman.

Spencer describes Rough Trade as ‘A music experience,’ it is a general destination for music ‘complete with coffee shop, performance stage, exhibition space, and ‘snug’ internet/workshop.’

Super famous and up and coming bands grace the stage four to five times a week including the likes of Vampire Weekend and Blur. Live music is an important part of the store, it is usually the first impression people get of someone, it is the foundation of music, also a completely different experience than sat listening to a CD at home.

Music Downloading hasn’t affected the shop at all, with sales up from last year. There has always been people who haven’t wanted to buy music, like in the 80s people used to tape music of the radio and now that has changed to using the internet. Rough Trade sell a lot of unique products and exclusive records, which is what sets it apart from the rest.
